Install options

Three paths, one home.

Windows installer

Double-click to install, then start talking. The free model is built in, so there is no API key to buy; it sits in your system tray, ready when you are.

macOS installer

Download the dmg and drag Engine7 into Applications. Right-click → Open the first time — we have not done Apple signing yet, so double-clicking gets blocked. That is expected, not a broken file.

Not sure? Apple menu → About This Mac → “Chip”: “Apple M…” takes the top one, “Intel” takes the bottom one.
If it says “damaged” and will not open: run the line below in Terminal, then open it again (a normal side effect of being unsigned — the file is fine):

npm, self-hosted

$ npm install -g engine7@latest && engine7 init

init walks you through generating a config and a workspace, and you bring your own model (Anthropic, OpenAI or Gemini compatible). Requires Node ≥ 22.

Requirements

Installer users need nothing installed up front; the npm path needs Node.js.

Version chain

When you need to pin a version (to roll back, or to reproduce an environment), use the versioned installer: Engine7Setup-<version>.exe, sitting in /d/ next to latest.

Install details and FAQ

Installer (Windows)

Download Engine7Setup-latest.exe and double-click through the wizard; once it finishes, start it from the desktop or the system tray. The free model is built in, so you can chat out of the box, with a daily usage cap. If you would rather use your own model, switch it in the config at any time.

Installer (macOS)

Download the dmg for your architecture (arm64 for Apple silicon, x64 for Intel), double-click to mount it, then drag Engine7 into Applications. Right-click → Open the first time: this build is not signed or notarized by Apple yet, so the system blocks a plain double-click. That block is expected — the file is fine. Afterwards a normal double-click works.

npm (self-hosted)

npm install -g engine7@latest && engine7 init. init generates the config, workspace and data directory, then you configure a model as prompted. Requires Node ≥ 22.

Common questions

If a download is interrupted or you need to roll back, use the versioned installer from the "Version chain" section above. The free model is provided by Engine 7 itself and does not draw on your own model quota. All data stays on your own device.

Open-source licenses

This installer bundles ffmpeg (for video transcoding) under GPLv3 / LGPL licenses. Full license texts and source-code offers are included in the resources/legal/ directory of the installer.
