Frequently asked questions
Do I need to buy an API key?
No. The installer ships with a built-in free model service, so you can start chatting the moment it is installed. If you would rather use your own model — Anthropic, OpenAI or Gemini compatible — switch it in the config at any time.
Where does my data live?
On your own machine. Engine 7 is a self-hosted engine: conversations, memories and task data never leave your computer. It is open source and auditable (Apache 2.0).
Which systems are supported?
The Windows and macOS installers are double-click installs; Linux and macOS can also install via npm (Node ≥ 22).
Is it open source?
The engine core is open source under Apache 2.0 — you can read it on GitHub.
